Behavior Theory and Philosophy
Behavior Theory and Philosophy
Although often associated with the experimental analysis ofbehavior, behavior theory and philosophy also is concerned with thoseconcepts that govern the practice and application of the science ofbehavior. Increasingly, behavior theory and philosophy also includesthe interpretation of classes of behavior that are either presentlybeyond the methods of scientific study or simply have not yet beenstudied using the methods of the experimental analysis of behavior. The experimental analysis of behavior, applied behavior analysis, andinterpretive analyses of behavior together for the corpus of conceptsthat constitute behavioral psychology. Philosophy itself constitutes afourth conceptual level that provides a wellspring of constructs andconcepts on which the content areas of behavior analysis draw.Philosophical principles also serve a watchdog function wherebybehavioral accounts of human action are frequently challenged, butmore often shaped. This volume has several goals with respect to the interplay betweenphilosophy and behavioral psychology's experimental, applied, andinterpretive levels of knowing. The first is to examine coreprinciples in the philosophy of science, as they are interpreted byand relate to behavioral psychology. The second goal is to examine howthese core principles interact with different problem areas in thestudy of human behavior, especially those of application andinterpretation. The third, broader, goal is to convey howexperimental, applied, and interpretive analyses complement oneanother to advance the understanding of behavior and, in so doing, also the philosophy of science.
